From real
to imaginary

an online course by Susannah Garden
1-29 of October
4 weeks
The course is in English
As illustrators, we frequently describe ourselves as a visual narrator. But just imagine being a visual scientist!

Indeed, we collect data in form of sketches and notes, observe people's behaviour, gestures, poses and even eavesdrop their conversations. We explore how light on the wall changes during the day, or how a tiny dog runs around in circles in the park. But these observations often live just in sketchbooks what makes good ideas stay unrealized.

On the course we translate observational sketches to graphic drawings — fully or partially. We move from real to imaginary and ask «what if…?».

We work step by step — with each decision made a new spinal of progress leads forward to the final drawings.

Accumulating a collection of ideas little by little we will go to work with illustration — discuss concepts and advantages of versions and then create a final work based on the best sketches. It might be a series of illustrations or comic strips.

Course programme
1. People
We will collect drawing observations according to a list of tips to make the process nonstandard. For example: to make sketches of someone in a shadow or someone with long limbs or someone who looks like they don't belong hereor someone who moves unusually. Analysis of work at the end of the week.

2. Places
We observe 2-3 different places: park, kiosk with food «to go», zoo store. Sketch everything that will help to realise what is the location, construction and function of these places. Make a written and drawing notes about what is happening there, who visits these places and what interesting subjects are there.

3. Story creation
We write simple stories based on feedback and recommendations to fill the gaps in stories about people or places. After creating a text version, we will make some simple storyboards or drawing series or comic strips.

4. Story ending
Create a final version of series or comics.
